Fenestrelle has a millenary history as we can see in some monuments:

the ancient medieval boundaries,

the marvellous Paris Church of St. Luis IX of France,

the Jesuit Convent (1659),

the ancient public oven and the famous Fortress of Fenestrelle which lays on the side

of the Mount Orsiera.

Fenestrelle includes several hamlets: Champs, Mentoulles, Villecloze, Grange, Chambons, Depot, Fondufaux, La Latta and the most characterìstìc Puy and Pequerei. These little countries, situated at 1700 m, are very ancient and preserve the rural architecture typical of the alpine villages.

The Parish of St Giusto in Mentoulles has got one of the most prestigious and rich historical archive that includes very old documents and ancient books. There are about 1000 precious documents about penal and civil trials, dating back to year 1200. The archive is made up of different areas:

The sports...

The sporting association offers various activities: tenrns, football, sporting climbing. In the winter: ice skating. In July an August water-gym.

Bocciofila association (bowels opened area) organizes a great summer program with competitions and indoor and outdoor recreational activities.

The Sporting fishing association organizes sociai competitions (in the Summer).

Escursions by foot or by mountain-bike.

Estate ragazzi: playing activities, trekking, escursions... for kids from 6 to 14 years.

The dates:

· Last Sunday of June: Alpines annual meeting

· Last Friday of July: Gastronomic Evening with traditional dishes

· From the 1st to the 31st of August: “Le Fenestrelle”: artistic and cultural festival and book fair at the Fortress of Fenestrelle

· On 25th of August: St Luis IX day. Folkloristic group “BaI da Sabre” exhibition.

 

FORTRESS MUTIN RUINS

Fortress Mutin was built up by Luis XIV at the end of the XVII century. It

was the Iast French fortress in Chisone valley. Its main function w as to defend Fenestrelle from the kingdom of Savoia. The fortress was easily conquerable because it was situated at the bottom of the valley. In 1708, the Piedmontese, conquered the Fort. Today we can stili see some ruins of this fortress: boundaries and bastions.

 

  The protected area“Orsiera Rocciavrè natural park”

The natural park is a protected area having a surface of 11000 hectares in Chisone, Susa and Sangone valleys. Orsiera (2890 ms) and Rocciavrè (2778 ms) are the two mountains which give the name to this area. In the park it is possible to observe a rich variety of natural environments, a rich fauna as chamois, deers, rock goats, mouflons, wolves, wild boars, etc. You can also visit the Fortress of Fenestrelle, the Abbey of Montebenedetto, the groups of typical houses built with stones, the excursion paths,...At all entries of the naturai park there are glass showcases illustrating the most important parks rules. The Folklorustuc Group “Bai da sabre”

Bal da sabre” goup is the most ancient folklorist tradition of Chisone valley. It was handed down generation by generation in order to maintain the culture of our tradition. The group includes girls dressed with the traditional, ancient clothes which show the traditional dances and boys called SPADONARI, which show a Saracen swords dance.

The choreographic exhibition is repeated every year during St. Luis day on 25th August.
